Axie Infinity Begins Granting NFT Owners Commercial Rights as Official Commodities

Sky Mavis has launched a merchandise store for its Axie Infinity game IP and is allowing owners to utilize a subset of their NFTs for commercial purposes.

The turn-based NFT monster-battling game, Axie Infinity, is taking a significant leap in commercializing its axolotl-inspired characters, releasing official merchandise and enabling owners of specific Axie NFTs to create and sell their own products.

Owners of 4,877 selected Axie NFTs can now generate income from their own merch and user-generated content (UGC) enterprises using their Mystic and Origin NFTs.

Jiho, Cofounder of Sky Mavis, stated, "We want to build on ownership-enabled UGC but want to iterate and execute step-by-step. Origins/Mystics are a natural choice to start experimenting because they are the original collections."

Mystic and Origin Axie owners can now leverage their NFT characters as mascots to kickstart their own business ventures. The Axie team suggests that owners may establish cafes, comic books, restaurants, or toy collections themed around Axie, thanks to lifted restrictions.

However, it's noteworthy that at present, only 5,000 out of a total of 11.9 million Axie NFTs — just 0.04% of all Axie NFTs — are eligible.

Axie Infinity now features a merch store selling Squishmallow-style figurines, a $300 small statue, branded hoodies, t-shirts, and baseball caps.

The ">code:axie_" collection draws inspiration from the initial Axie mint in 2018, where buyers purchased Axies without accompanying artworks. Instead, their NFTs display unique codes.

Buyers can pay using cryptocurrency or fiat currency, and Sky Mavis promises the first 5,000 purchasers will receive a free Axie NFT and be eligible to win one of three Mystic Axie NFTs. Additionally, Axie Infinity fans in the Philippines using the Grab app can earn Grab points and discounts on Axie merchandise by clicking ads within the app that redirect to the Axie merchandise store.

Those paying in cryptocurrency can unlock additional rewards upon reaching thresholds of $10, $50, $100, and $1,000, along with special badges, plush toys, and other incentives.

Sky Mavis will allocate 20% of net profits from merchandise sales to the Axie Community Treasury, established to promote community-based decision-making and progressive decentralization. The team has also released free online image files for 12 different Axies.
