Otherside: Legends of the Mara Launches Beta Version in September 2023

Yuga Labs, the organization behind the NFT collection Bored Ape Yacht Club, announced this week the upcoming beta release of Legends of the Mara (LotM) set to launch in September, available to holders of Otherdeed NFTs.

According to the company, Legends of the Mara is a collection-based 2D strategy game, while Otherside itself is a larger-scale 3D game. LotM will also unveil more information about Kodas, small bipedal creatures existing on 10% of the initial 100,000 parcels of land.

LotM is advertised as part of the larger Otherside metaverse game being developed at Yuga Labs.

In Legends of the Mara, players can develop their Mara into powerful Kodamara, harvest sediment, and defeat malevolent forces that may attack their Otherdeed lands, according to the Otherside website.

All holders of NFT land with a different certificate can request a Vessel, regardless of whether they own a Koda on their land or not. Each Vessel will evolve into a Mara character "under suitable catalyst conditions," capable of further evolving into Kodamara. Maras and Kodamaras can also protect Otherside, albeit not as strong as original Kodas.

There are three main types of Maras:

  • Hunter: Huntsman
  • Farmer: Agriculturalist
  • Enchanter: Sorcerer

The evolution of Mara is partly determined by Otherside's five constellations, known as "Odiac," spanning across four seasons. Maras will need to consume seasonal Catalysts to evolve, and the characteristics of the land where Mara resides will influence their traits as they evolve into Kodamara.

Yuga Labs shared that the Legends of the Mara experience will develop in the coming months, with rewards for Otherdeed NFT holders. The company tweeted: "More possibilities will be explored as the full launch approaches."

The company first released its Otherdeed NFTs in May 2022 with much fanfare, featuring a high-end minting process that congested the Ethereum network and spiked gas prices. To date, Otherdeeds have facilitated transactions valued at over $1.26 billion, according to data from CryptoSlam.
